We are looking for BS degree medical technologists here at Lake City and Gainesville, FL. The Veterans Administration is a good place to work and the benefits are better than most private sector facilities especially a retirement package in addition to a 401k. The pay rates are comparable to the private sector. All MT's are GS-9 and the pay scale is published on the internet. Currently, a new MT would start at $21.65 and someone with a few years experience would start around $23.10. Anyone with prior military or government service will get first preference and their previous service counts toward retirement.

At Lake City, we are a small to medium size facility. There will be two 3:30-12m and four 7-3:00 or 8-4:30 positions available. There is a rotation for weekend coverage that is currently 1 weekend every 2 months.

Gainesville is a large facility with more testing capability. Most of their shifts are evening and/or night but they also have many coming up for retirement and day shifts will open up.

2) Provide evaluations for filter paper used to collect whole blood for newborn screening and epidemiologic studies; use mass spectrometry to test for amino acids and other biomarkers for newborn screening metabolic disorders in dried blood spots as part of the quality assurance program provided to state public health laboratories and international laboratories. Prepare, certify, and distribute dried blood spot quality assurance materials; maintain instruments and dried blood spot inventories.

3) Conduct mass spectrometric analysis for lysosomal storage disorders (LSDs). Perform mass spectrometric LSD assay optimization and validation. Prepare, certify, and distribute dried blood spot quality assurance materials; maintain instruments and dried blood spot inventories. Distribute reagents for lysosomal storage disorders testing to laboratories worldwide; maintain reagent orders and inventories.

4) Provide support for amino acids and acylcarnitines tests as part of the quality assurance program provided to state public health laboratories and international laboratories. Conduct mass spectrometric assay development for secondary disease biomarkers in dried blood spots, including fatty acid oxidation, urea cycle disorders, and aminoacidurias.

NSQAP provides dried blood spots for quality control and proficiency testing to more than 470 laboratories in over 70 countries. The candidates should have a working knowledge of analytical chemistry, biochemistry, or biology, and basic statistics. Independent research and current laboratory experience are advantageous but not required.
